How to Be The Best Dad You Can Be

Whether you’re in your first lap of fatherhood or you’re on the homestretch, every dad could use some words of wisdom; we have some of that for you below.

In honor of Father’s Day, we talked to NASCAR’s Corey Lajoie, Michael McDowell and Chase Briscoe about what God is teaching them through fatherhood. We can learn a lot from parenting about God and how he loves us – just ask these guys.

Start off strong

If you’re near the starting line – you’ve got plenty of time to take this advice from Proverbs 22:6; “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

If you feel like you didn’t do that with your children from the start, it’s not time to wave the checkered flag yet. There’s grace for you in Psalm 37:23-24; “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.”

Go flat-out

Being the best dad you can be is going to take a lot of pushing and intentionality (don’t just draft off of mom). When you put in that effort, you’ll leave the devil in the dust.

Ways to put the pedal to the metal:

1 – “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9

2 – “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.Ephesians 6:4

3- “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Luke 15:20

Don’t forget your infield

The infield is where you get help when you really need it. It’s your community of other guys who follow Jesus and will be there to help you fix what needs fixing. Your wife is in the infield, your church, your mentor, etc.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 shows us it’s important to make sure you’ve got the right team around you.
