Random Acts of Kindness

RAOK

Written by Betty Weaver

I have this little quirk about needing to get errands done early each Saturday. My routine: post office, fill the car with gas, go to the grocery store and hurry home to take care of the chores awaiting me there.

This past Saturday I debated whether to stop and get coffee at McDonald’s or just hurry on home. McDonald’s won out! As I drove up to order, I gave in to my desire to order a biscuit too. Upon reaching the window to pay, the young man looked at me and said, “You don’t owe anything. The car in front of you paid for your breakfast”.

I was stunned! I smiled and said, “I wish I could thank them, but I have no idea who they were so I will just give God the praise for that act of kindness that was shown to me today.”

I drove on home thinking of a similar day a few months back that I spent with my sister. She and I called it our Angel Day.

After some shopping time, we stopped at the local DMV office. My sister was in need of a new handicap tag for her car. The clerk called us to the counter, and I explained our purpose in being there. She said, “No problem. I’ll get you a new one.”  My sister then asked the cost, and the clerk shared the amount with her and finished completing the information for the tag. She soon handed the tag to us, and we handed over the fee.

She then said, “No just take it.”

Shocked, my sister asked, “Are you sure?”

She responded “Yes, and you both have a good day”!

My sister could not reach over the counter to give her a hug, so she threw her a kiss.  On our way to the car, I shared, “I think we just meet an angel!”

It was time for lunch, and we decided upon a local favorite restaurant. We just received our meal when a young lady sat down beside us. While we knew this woman, we weren’t expecting her. She sat with us, and we had a wonderful time. When we were ready to go, she so graciously paid for our food! I will keep her anonymous and be watching as God blesses her for her kindness.

We soon left, and I drove towards my sister’s house to take her home. I said “Looks like we met two angels today. Thank you Jesus!”

My sister smiled and said “This is so unreal I cannot believe what has happened today. We have been through so much lately, but God is good”.

Yes. He. Is.

As we neared the house, we decided to stop for one of my sister’s favorite treats…a sugar-free cappuccino! I made my way to the machine to fill up a cup for her, and I noticed that it was only spitting out water. I let go of the handle, thinking something must be wrong. A gentleman watched this scene unfold from his nearby location, and he moved closer and began to assist.

“No let’s start over. The cappuccino will come in last,” he gently suggested.

I am sure I had a strange look on my face! He took the cup, emptied it and then filled it back up and handed it to my sister. She thanked him with a smile and a hand shake. He headed over to the cashier, and I heard him say as he pointed in our direction, “I am paying for those two ladies also.”

I tried to hurry to the counter to thank him, but he was on his way out the door. Upon leaving, my sister shared how she would never forget this day, and I certainly won’t forget either. God is so good to us.

Whether these were angels in our midst or simply the kindness of individuals God placed in our path is not what matters. It was all a blessing from God. Sometimes I think God lets us know He is with us in so many different ways.  You never know how you are going to touch a life by an act of kindness.
