Lessons Learned from Furry Love

Written by Karen Anderson

It was Memorial Day Weekend two years ago that we welcomed the cutest little almost-2-pound Yorkie puppy into our home. (She has since grown to 4½ pounds.) It had been a year and a half since the two dogs that we had loved for 18 years passed away from old age. We didn’t think we could ever love another dog like we did those two, and it took some time for us to decide to get another dog. However, after finding and bringing her into our home, Daisy May has become a delightful addition to our family.

This little 4½ pound ball of fur is personality plus…always ready to either play, guard the house from monsters inside or out, love on you, or eat (and not necessarily in that order).

During the two years since we’ve had Daisy, I have found it interesting to observe her actions and how she communicates with me in different ways…causing me to think about my relationship with the Lord and how I communicate with Him. It has been my practice to meet with Him almost every morning.  Some mornings I happily approach Him with joy in my heart, like Daisy does when I come home in the evening and she is all over me with excitement.  Then there are times when Daisy will come up to me and when I reach down to get her, she draws back, almost like she wants me to pick her up but then changes her mind. I think about how often I go to spend time with the Lord and “the cares of this life” clutter my mind, and I end up leaving without really connecting with Him. Then there are those times when I want to just lay my head down in His lap and let Him love and comfort me, like Daisy does when she is tired or being just plain sweet. Sometimes when she gets into something she knows she shouldn’t and tries to hide or get away, it reminds me of those times when I have sinned and feel distant from the Lord.

Whatever time it is though, and no matter how I feel, I know that He is always there for me. He never rejects me. I can’t imagine that anything Daisy ever did would make me not want her in my life or to not love her. Isn’t it comforting to know that the Lord of the universe loves us even more than we can humanly love each other… or furry little creatures?

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.” Jeremiah 31:3
