What’s Your Story?

What's Your Story - Jonathan - 090215Written by Jonathan Unthank

I am a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan! I lived in St. Louis during my early elementary years, and that’s when my love of baseball became a reality. Watching stars like Ozzie “The Wizard Of Oz” Smith, Willie McGee, Terry Pendleton, Vince Coleman, and others play at the historic Busch Stadium fill my childhood memories. Being a dad now, there is something in me that wants my kids to know about the old stories of the players…the stats they achieved, the remarkable pre-game flip of Ozzie Smith as he headed to his shortstop position. Memories of sitting with my brother and late grandpa, hoping to get a foul ball, the smell of popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jacks. Those are stories I want to pass down to my kids.

Our lives are made of stories. From our birthplace, to where we were married, or the hospital where our children were born, we are living a unique story made by God just for us. I love to think of it that way. God has created a story for me that no one else will have. It will be full of joy, ups and downs, loss, love, adventure, and so much more. There will be days I wish a certain page or chapter was left out, but ultimately it adds to the story of my life. Those are the things I want to capture and share with my kids. By giving them a little glimpse into my life, they will also get a glimpse of my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. That’s the beauty of telling your story.

I have been talking to my parents recently about pulling out the old family pictures so I can show my kids what life was like when I was a kid, and what life was like when their grandparents were kids. Kids think so concretely, therefore grandparents appear ancient to them. I don’t even know if my kids have seen a black and white picture, or a Polaroid. They will soon though!

When was the last time you shared your story? I mean really went back in time, and thumbed through your “memory catalog”. I don’t want to live in the past, but I do think it’s good to remember where you came from, so you can appreciate where God has you now, and with that in mind, look forward to where He is going to take you. Sharing your story is not only good for others, it is good for you. I always feel better after sharing my story, and I am absolutely encouraged when I hear someone else’s story.

I am in my late 30s, still young, but I have traveled through life for a good amount of time. I am grateful for the times God has saved me from trouble, thankful when He puts someone on my path to encourage me during tough times, and unbelievably unworthy of my wife and kids I get to journey with through life.

Don’t let your story fly by so fast that you don’t take a moment to reflect on all He has done. It’s cause for celebration and praise to a loving God who is the giver of life and giver of stories for us to share.

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe… Psalm 107:2 (NIV)
