There is Beauty Beneath the Surface

There is Beauty Beneath the SurfaceWritten by Betty Weaver

After looking at how dirty my gazebo had gotten from the past several years, I decided to paint it last week. The paint from the past was peeling off, and the floor was dirty from mildew and stains, making the surface not very attractive. Thinking back and remembering when we first built it just how clean and pretty it was, I was determined to make it look like that again. I painted all the posts and pickets with a beautiful brown color of paint.  That afternoon I stood back and looked with a smile on my face; I had made some progress that day. I was able to bring some beauty back to the surface. The next day consisted of pressure washing the floor and covering it with a lovely stain.

When all was complete, I stood there thinking maybe that’s the way we look at life and people at times. We just focus on the surface and not the underlying beauty. As I put back the bench and chairs in the gazebo with the job now complete, I thought about how sometimes we get trapped in our situations whether it is worry, heartache, family problems, health, financial or just all the every day problems that come our way throughout life. Those things often take away our smile, and we might not feel like ourselves that day.

Perhaps we pass someone in the store or on the street and think, Oh my goodness, look at that person…or that person is just rude…or (maybe) they look a little gruff. I am guilty of being judgmental as most of us have and sometimes have to rethink my thoughts and ask God for forgiveness. Can you imagine what a kind word or a smile might do to those individuals instead? The person you have just encountered might be going through some things that neither you nor I could handle. The pressure of stress, worry, or sickness can make our “surfaces” look so worn and torn. Our kindness and prayers for someone can bring beauty back to that surface. Open the door for someone, give a smile or just a kind “Hello how are you today?”  I think I need to keep the pressure washer going to see the underlying beauty in all things.

I’ve had many situations I can remember when I would wonder, “Where is God when I need Him; why am I being attacked with this situation?”  I had to keep my faith and trust in Him; He was and is the only one that can help me with the situation I have faced or about to face.  It takes great faith to believe that God understands when we are wondering what glory could possibly come from our painful circumstances. However, He is the one that can ease the pain, heal the broken heart, and bring about that new job or whatever trial has placed stains upon your life. He is the one who will take the stains from the surface and restore the beauty in our heart and in our everyday lives.
